Kubernetes implementation……Challenges and Workaround

Kubernetes popularly known as K8S is the leading container orchestration platform that is open source. It aids in automating the deployment of containerized DevOps/DevSecOps applications along with scaling, and management.

Though many organizations are embracing the platform, there are certain challenges that need to be addressed.

Security

Kubernetes is vulnerable to security threats because of the complexities in multi-container applications. Tracing out the root cause of the problem becomes critical in a multi-container environment.  This makes the system susceptible to security threats.

Possible solution:  Robust, automated Observability and Monitoring mechanism with the help of various tools can act as a soul saver, Container separation, Role-based access control also aid.

Networking

Complexities arise when an application spans multi-cloud infrastructure. IP-based policies and inconsistent resource allocation pose certain restrictions on the seamless working of the platform.

Possible solution:   Service mesh-based infrastructure management and security plugins can be helpful in boosting security aspects.

Interoperability

Migrating the existing apps to the Kubernetes environment is challenging. Interoperability among the components deployed in multiple containers can be strenuous.

Possible Solution: Interoperability risks should in identified prior and middleware solutions should be identified for seamless transition among different factors.

Storage

Storage is a big challenge when Kubernetes is deployed on-premise.  As the application grows,  scaling up the storage requirements on on-premise servers becomes cumbersome.

Possible Solution: Augmenting the existing storage, Opting for the public clouds for storage can be the better choice in such a scenario.

Infrastructure

Microservices deployments in Kubernetes spawn huge amounts of data over their lifecycle.  Scaling up the application may lead to Server outages and downtime.

Possible Solutions: Fine-tuning the scaling operations using automated scaling tools or the v2beta2.

Installation complexities

Kubernetes installation and configuration is Complex and needs experience to streamline the process. Installation involves lots of configuration that makes the installation task complicated.

Possible Solution: Expertise and continuous learning can help to overcome the problems involved in the installation and configuration-related activities.

Adaptability in the team

Kubernetes involves lots of complexities at the initial stage of migrations. This can be challenging for the team to cope with the new change. Also, the Kubernetes learning curve is steep that requires the patience and dedication of the team.

Possible Solution: Continuous learning and catching up with new developments may help in this scenario.

Conclusion

There are various complexities involved with Kubernetes. Once we address the challenges, the processes smooth out and in turn can reduce the challenges related to application development and deployment. These challenges are to be taken as an investment to reap the benefits of scalable, robust, and well-managed application deployment.
